Some interesting history about our company:

William Viner established the firm in 1777 on the present site, in West Malling, Kent, and it soon became well known in the area as a General Department Store as well as being Funeral Directors and Memorial Masons. It is currently one of the oldest family established and run Funeral Directors in the country.

We have carried out funerals for families from all of the following areas any beyond:

Year	Viner & Sons, West Malling & the world
1777	William Viner establishes the business on its present West Malling site. George III is King and Britain is fighting the American War of Independence. (Viner and Sons)
1805	Kent’s coast is fortified with Martello Towers against the threat of invasion by Napoleon. (English Heritage)
1837	Queen Victoria comes to the throne. Viner & Sons is already 60 years old. (The Royal Family)
1874	Malling railway station opens, connecting the area to the growing Victorian railway network. Viner & Sons is already 97 years old. (Wikipedia)
1901	The Victorian age ends. Viner & Sons has now served West Malling for 124 years.
1914–1918	Britain and Kent live through the First World War. (Imperial War Museum)
1939	The Air Ministry takes over West Malling airfield and develops RAF West Malling. (Kent Heritage)
1941	RAF West Malling becomes a leading night-fighter station. (Kent Heritage)
1944	RAF West Malling takes part in Operation Diver, defending the South East against V1 flying bombs. (Kent Heritage)
1952	Elizabeth II becomes Queen. Viner & Sons is already 175 years old. (The Royal Family)
1953	The Coronation is televised to millions — something unimaginable when the business began. (The Royal Family)
1990	Redevelopment of the former RAF West Malling site begins, eventually creating today’s Kings Hill community. (kings-hill.com)
1991	James Gardner’s own story begins, washing the Viner & Sons funeral vehicles at weekends as a young boy.
1994	The Channel Tunnel opens, physically connecting Kent with continental Europe.
1997	James Gardner begin working as a trainee funeral director at Viner & Sons.
2020	Twenty-nine years after first washing the vehicles, James & Charlotte Gardner acquire Viner & Sons.
Today	One of the country’s longest-established independent funeral directors continues looking after families from the heart of West Malling.
2027	Viner & Sons reaches an extraordinary milestone — 250 years since William Viner established the business.
